Autumn in the Woods

autumn-in-grant-woodsMelissa Blue Fine Art

Grant Woods was the first forest preserve I became aware of. It has been in the capable hands of its stewards Joyce and George Proper for quite some time now. It is filled with surprises and when Joyce takes me for a walk I am always in for a treat, no matter the season. We came across this spot last fall, a lovely little savanna at the edge between an interesting meadow and a forest. The jewel like colors make my heart sing~ I hope they lift your heart as well.

  1. How beautiful! I love the way you have the tree branches arcing over the meadow as if protecting it.

  2. Thank you so much, Deborah. Yes, I too was struck by the sheltering way the small tree embraced this little community of plants.

  3. Such lovely colors…the yellow contrasted with the sky. It only lasts for such a short time. Thank you for capturing it’s beauty.

  4. Sumac? This is delightful — I want to hike there. Thanks for taking me along.

    1. Yes, indeed, a lovely stand of sumac. I’m so pleased that you like it. Should you find yourself in my neck of the woods I’ll take you there! πŸ™‚

      1. Just like you took Eve and me. Thanks.

      2. Now when I am there, and the other trails we visited together, they have an additional layer of specialness to me because you and Eve were there too. I still marvel at how genuine friendship can spring up in this venue. I’m thankful! Please give Eve my greetings πŸ™‚

      3. Likewise. Will do.

  5. This certainly lifts my heart, Melissa. The colours are so beautfully rich.

    1. You are so kind, Pete. I’m really glad it touches your heart. Thank you.

  6. Very beautiful. I’m not familiar with Grant Woods. Did you paint this last year? Otherwise, your fall colors are considerably more advanced than ours.

  7. This is so beautiful, Melissa!

    1. Thank you Eliza!

  8. I like that very much. The dabs of red really carry my along.

  9. Thank you Jim. Dabs of red carry me right along as well πŸ™‚

  10. Very lovely. Is this a private preserve?

    1. Thank you! No, Grant Woods is part of Lake County Forest Preserve District. We voters approved purchasing bonds, (I believe), and now we own LOTS of land here in Lake County Illinois. It is pretty great. In Grant Woods alone there is a bog, an extremely rare remnant of prairie that was never plowed, and a stand of woods that shelter a 350 yr old bur oak. There is a professional staff of biologists in charge of these preserves, and maintaining their ecological health is a joint effort between the staff and volunteers.

  11. Great colors and shapes. This seems to be the fruit of your freed-up style.

    1. Thank you Steve. Yes, I’ve turned my paintbrush loose and it feels like I am finally painting the way I’ve always wanted to.

  12. I can’t resist adding that it’s proper for the preserve to be in the hands of Joyce and George.

    1. I have, in fact, teased them with that very comment πŸ™‚

  13. I always look forward to the brilliant sumac reds of autumn and especially appreciate that in your painting, Melissa. I am hoping our drought isn’t going to affect them here but that remains to be seen. I am seeing some color. We are looking for a rainy weekend.
I like the progression of colors up to red and then into the yellows with hints of red and orange. Lovely palette.

    1. Thank you Steve. I really like sumac, too. Like you I’ve been worried there won’t be any color this year. I have it in my garden and about the time a leaf turns red it also drops. sigh. But it is raining~ are you getting some now too?

  14. You’ve truly captured the essence of autumn. Is there a blue spot in there, or are my eyes going wonky? A bird perhaps? Whatever it is, it’s lovely! And, yes I like your style!!!

  15. You spotted the blue! That is a patch of fringed gentian that grows there~ I hoped someone would see it πŸ™‚ Thank you so much Gunta!

  16. I love this picture. The delicate rendering of beautiful colours – gorgeous! It induces a feeling of peace in me.

  17. I’m so glad Robyn. When a painting evokes feelings of peace, it is a success in my book! Thank you πŸ™‚

  18. It is absolutely mesmerising! πŸ™‚

  19. I always like recognizing bands of color like these. So well done!

  20. I do too πŸ™‚ Thank you!

  21. It won’t be long now before these beautiful will return, Melissa!

    1. For sure! The summer has flown by, as it always seems to do.
